Not really wishing to sound a 'sour note',i just hope that John Lawless's input is kept to a minimum.I suppose we owe him a dept of thanks for the DVD's themselves, but the best one that i have,is the Herschel Sizemore /Bibey one,on which he doesn't appear. On the Adam Steffey one,A.S. Hardly seems to get into his stride, because of all the chat, & the Alan Bibey one suffers the same fate. I mean no disrespect to Mr.Lawless, but less talk & more tuition does it for me.
Cims drug book 2017. I love Sierra's playing, but i'll await a few more opinions before i buy, Ivan. Hi Ivan/Alan. This seems to come up every time we release a new project. Some people really enjoy the biographical sections of our DVDs, and others are annoyed that they don't start out with music. I always receive email from folks who congratulate me for the questions asked in the interview segments, and others who wish I would shut up.
Each artist chooses whether they want to be interviewed or go it alone on camera. It isn't my decision, and it is much easier on me if I can direct the shoot and not be on camera. I hope my appearance in the Sierra DVD won't discourage you from studying all she has to offer. Don't forget that your DVD player has a Skip button. Hi Ivan/Alan.

They shouldn't be offered the choice to begin with.
The interview stuff is not what everyone (and I suspect most people) buy the DVD's for. Sure there will be some that like it but that's not really a compelling argument. You can find people that like almost anything. It's a bit lame to suggest people use the skip button.
It's not the customer's job to navigate through unnecessary material they may not be interested in. It's something that should be left out or included in a way so as not to detract from the main purpose of the DVD, imho. I don't think I would appreciate the on-camera presence of an producer who was just there to ask questions that could be answered anywhere (like on the performers website). However there is an easy solution. Most DVD's nowadays come with special features, like interviews or out-takes). Those are menu item that appear at the start of the DVD. 'It may be that true that each artist chooses to be interviewed or not, but that's not an excuse.
They shouldn't be offered the choice to begin with.' Pretty harsh.
I'm pretty sure that ACUTAB is still in business and that they have a good idea how to produce their products. It didn't sound like Mr. Lawless was making excuses, but rather giving an explanation. I actually kind of shocked that anyone would feel empowered enough to bash someone else's vision for the product they are successfully producing AND selling. From that perspective people shouldn't talk about themselves or their music at shows-they should just play.
Music that we play comes from oral traditions where context matters. It does inform a persons style where they came from and how they came to the style they play. People who think music is about notes and not stories, I think, miss the point. Bill Monroe, Sierra Hull and any other person with a strong voice on an instrument is telling their story every time they play and it makes sense that to learn to approach that story musically one would be helped by hearing it verbalized. I would like to thank anyone out there who is taking the time to maintain the oral tradition that has made American music so great, even if it takes the trappings of modern technology-including Mr. 'It may be that true that each artist chooses to be interviewed or not, but that's not an excuse. They shouldn't be offered the choice to begin with.'
